Functional Data
1) Control of melanin productionPlacenta extract was added to a B16 melanoma cell culture or to a mixture of tyrosinase (an enzyme involved in the production of melanin, a cause of pigmentation spots) and its substrate tyrosine to investigate the effect of the extract on the control of melanin production. The placenta extract inhibited melanin production more effectively than did the control in both experiments.
2) Protection from the skin aging caused by ultraviolet exposure
A test food containing placenta extract at 5% was given freely to mice. The mice were subjected to ultraviolet radiation for 1 min twice a week to evaluate the moisture content of the skin and the thickness of the epidermis. Intake of Placenta extract curbed the decline in the amount of water in the skin and the thickness of the epidermis.
3） Control of facial pigmentation spots
Once daily for 3 months when the amount of ultraviolet radiation in the sunlight increased, nine adult women each received a capsule containing 200 mg of placenta extract. The number of spots was counted by using an instrument that measures facial skin condition. The placenta extract inhibited the increase of the number of spots more effectively than did the control.
